How to photograph black paper targets without glare or blur

Why the black zone is difficult

A pellet hole in white paper creates a dark opening with bright torn fibres. Inside a black aiming mark, the opening and print may share similar tone while fibres catch light unpredictably. Glare can look like missing paper; a shadow can hide an actual tear.

Detection works best when illumination reveals paper texture without producing a bright reflection. More contrast is not automatically more information.

Build soft, directional light

• Place the card near a window with indirect daylight, or bounce a lamp from a pale wall.
• Move the phone slightly so its own shadow falls outside the target.
• If the paper is glossy, shift the light or camera until reflections leave the black zone.
• Avoid mixing strongly different light colours when possible; automatic white balance may change across the card.
• Do not use flash directly above the card unless it is diffused and produces no central glare.

Focus, stability and exposure

Tap a thin printed ring near the group to focus. Brace your hands or phone, wait for focus to settle and take more than one frame if the range light is low. Moving closer usually preserves more real detail than digital zoom.

If the phone allows exposure adjustment, reduce only enough to keep the white paper from clipping. An underexposed black zone can lose the subtle grey fibre edges needed to distinguish holes.
