How to read a shot-group centre and adjust sights
A tight group away from centre and a wide group around centre are different problems. The group centre helps you decide which one you have.

Group centre and group size answer different questions
Group centre is the average horizontal and vertical position of all included shots relative to target centre. It describes placement. Extreme spread and mean radius describe precision around that average. Neither replaces the other.
A tight group 4 mm left suggests the sights or aiming reference may be offset. A wide group whose centre happens to be zero can still require technique or setup work before a sight change is meaningful.
Use enough representative shots
A three-shot cluster can move dramatically with the next pellet. Prefer a larger group fired under the setup you intend to keep, and include ordinary shots rather than selecting only the best-looking holes. Confirm that the offset persists across more than one card.
Separate a known called error only if your exclusion rule was decided honestly and recorded. Repeated low-left shots that feel surprising are still data; deleting them makes the centre more comforting, not more useful.
Translate offset into a cautious sight test
- Read the sight manual: click direction and millimetres-per-click vary by model and sight radius.
- Confirm whether the stated click value applies at 10 m or another distance.
- Move the rear sight in the direction you want the group to move; verify your specific hardware.
- Round conservatively when the calculated correction falls between clicks.
- Record the change, then shoot a new confirmation group before making another adjustment.
